Our doctors provide effective treatment for ADHD through online medication prescriptions. Here’s what you can expect:
Guanfacine is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-2A adrenergic receptor agonists. It works by affecting receptors in the brain to improve symptoms such as attention span, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity in individuals with ADHD. This medication works very similarly to Clonidine, another medication also used to treat ADHD.
Guanfacine is available in both immediate-release and extended-release forms, allowing for flexible dosing options based on individual needs. The extended-release form is typically taken once daily, making it a convenient option for managing symptoms throughout the day.
Guanfacine is FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD but it may also be used off-label for other health issues, such as anxiety disorders, PTSD, tic disorders, and autism spectrum disorder. Off-label use means that while the medication is considered safe and effective for these additional conditions, they have not been fully studied or approved by the FDA for these specific uses.
It is crucial to follow your doctor’s instructions when taking Guanfacine to ensure the best possible outcome and to minimize potential side effects. Never stop taking Guanfacine abruptly, as doing so can lead to significant withdrawal symptoms. If you need to discontinue the medication, your doctor will provide a plan to taper off the dosage gradually.
Guanfacine is FDA-approved for ADHD but can also be prescribed off-label for other conditions. If you have any questions about why a medication is prescribed, feel free to ask your online doctor. We at Reimagine encourage open discussion regarding treatment plans and we want our patients to be well informed.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Guanfacine, available as Intuniv and Tenex, helps improve attention span, reduce hyperactive behavior, and enhance impulse control.
Guanfacine, traditionally used for ADHD, may be prescribed off-label for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It can help alleviate symptoms such as hyperarousal and intrusive thoughts by modulating noradrenergic activity in the brain.
Guanfacine, commonly known as Intuniv or Tenex, may be prescribed off-label to help manage symptoms of Tic Disorders and Tourette Syndrome. It works by modulating the activity of certain receptors in the brain, which can reduce tics and improve impulse control.
Guanfacine, typically used to treat ADHD, may be prescribed off-label for anxiety disorders. It can help reduce symptoms by modulating the brain's response to stress and decreasing hyperarousal.
Your psychiatrist will give you detailed instructions on how to take your Guanfacine prescription. You can also ask your pharmacist if you have further questions.
Be sure to read and follow the directions on your prescription label. If you have any questions, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Guanfacine is available in different forms and doses, so it’s important to adhere to the specific instructions provided. It is usually prescribed to be taken once daily. For example, the extended-release form is often taken as 1 mg to 4 mg orally once per day. From our experience, Guanfacine is typically more sedating than other medications for ADHD such as Clonidine, and therefore is usually dosed at night.
Guanfacine may cause various side effects, most of which are generally mild and may decrease over time. Side effects include drowsiness, tiredness, low blood pressure, and dry mouth. Many side effects that appear when an individual first starts taking the medication often go away after the first two to three weeks.
Less frequent but more severe side effects can occur, although they are rare. These might include significant drops in blood pressure, slow heart rate, or severe dizziness. It’s important to monitor blood pressure regularly, especially when first starting the medication or adjusting the dose.
Other less common but potentially severe side effects of Guanfacine could include mental/mood changes, signs of liver problems such as jaundice, and severe skin reactions.
If you experience any severe side effects or notice new or concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention, including calling 911 if necessary. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about the side effects of Guanfacine.
Guanfacine may interact with other medications and supplements. Always consult your doctor before changing your medication regimen, including over-the-counter drugs.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming alcohol while taking Guanfacine. Regular alcohol use may increase side effects and reduce the medication's effectiveness.
Consult your doctor before stopping Guanfacine. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to withdrawal symptoms that can be very uncomfortable.

Yes, Guanfacine is frequently paired with other mental health medications such as stimulants or SSRIs. However, consult with your provider to ensure that it is appropriate and safe, as there are some medications that cannot be taken concurrently.
Missing doses of your medication is never ideal. However, if you do miss a dose of your Guanfacine, it is typically best to resume taking the medication the next day at the same dose. Consult with your provider if you have questions.
